Welcome

Welcome

Ignatius Mabasa is a writer, gospoet and dub poet based in Harare, Zimbabwe. He is passionate about words and has been writing since he was in Form one.

book pileUnlike many of his contemporaries, Ignatius writes exclusively in his mother tongue, Shona because, in his own words: “Inspiration almost always comes to me in my mother language – no matter where I am. I have tried to convert the lines that have come to me in my native language into English to try and please as well as show those around me that I am a writer across languages, but my lines in English are never the same as they come to me in Shona…”

His first novel, Mapenzi, won the Zimbabwe Book Publishers Association Best Shona Novel of the Year award in 1999 and went on to be voted as one of the top 75 Zimbabwean books of the century.
